For the 1962 Topps baseball card set, Roger Maris was honored by being put on card #1 in the set. He did, after all, hit 61 home runs in 1961, breaking Babe Ruth's single season home run record of 60 set in 1927. The back of the card reads: "The most talked about player of the decade, Roger went into the record books as the only man ever to hit 61 home runs in a season. The famed home run slugger crashed the history making homer during the last day of the season into the Yankee Stadium's right field stands."

The 1962 Topps set is particularly condition-sensitive due to the brown wood grain borders which make edge and corner wear more obvious than white borders do. In addition, the #1 card of any set is subject to more wear and tear than the others as the cards are usually stacked in numerical order with the #1 card at the top, making it most susceptible to damage and fading. This card, however, has survived in outstanding near mint/mint condition.
