George Herman "Babe" Ruth... the "Babe"... "el Bambino"... the "Sultan of Swat"... the greatest home run hitter of his day... whatever you call him, whichever nickname you want to give him, he's the world's most famous baseball player ever, possibly the most recognized name in the entire history of sports. And here he is, immortalized on this lovely 1948 Leaf baseball card.

Babe Ruth is an American folk hero. History is replete with fantastic stories about the Babe's exploits on and off the field, his mammoth home run shots, his legendary appetites for food, cigars, and women. One day a newspaper reporter commented that Ruth's salary (80 thousand) was more than President Herbert Hoover's (75 thousand). Babe's reply? "I know, but I had a better year than Hoover."

The 1948 Leaf baseball card set has been considered by connoisseurs a pop "art form" unto itself; an entire set of 1948 Leafs was on display at New York's Museum of Modern Art in the mid-nineties. Babe Ruth actually passed away in 1948. This card, included along with those of the active players of the day, was issued as a memorial to the baseball legend.
