pair of Eames LCW chairs, circa 1945
pair of Eames LCW chairs, circa 1945
A pair of museum-quality LCW's (Lounge Chair - Wood) in the desirable red color variation designed by Charles Eames for the Herman Miller Furniture Company in Zeeland, Michigan. The Eames molded plywood chair has become a classic of mid-twentieth century American furniture design with its clean details and sculpted curves. The seat and back, molded to fit the contours of the human body, together with the rubber "shock" mounts which permit the chair to flex with any shifting of position, provide comfort rarely found in a non-upholstered chair. These and other Eames designs have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City and in other major retrospective design exhibitions. Art & Antiques magazine, in their annual special issue [March 2000, page 122], included the Eames molded plywood chair among the "Top Treasures of the Century"!!

pair of Laverne lucite chairs, the Daffodil and the Buttercup, circa 1957
pair of Laverne lucite chairs, the Daffodil and the Buttercup, circa 1957
Presented here is a pair of Erwine Laverne lucite chairs, produced by Laverne Originals, New York, in 1957. These chairs were part of the "Invisible Group", the obvious allusion being made to the use of this revolutionary new clear plastic called 'lucite'. Furniture made of lucite did not seem to take up any space!

Rita Reif, who wrote about design for The Times, gave the Invisible chairs a rave review in a 1958 article. She said, "I knew immediately what it was, how innovative: it was the first time we saw full-fledged modern design in acrylic...so light and airy. Dreamlike. And so amusing. Really the most important thing they [the Lavernes] ever did." In Reif's article, Erwine Laverne, a tall, imposing man with a strong ego, told Reif that "the most important element in rooms is people, not furniture." Hence, the invisibility.

The scoop-shaped seat upon inverted circular base are molded as one piece. The model on the left, with the armrests, is the "Daffodil"; on the right is the "Buttercup". Each chair comes with a furry white knit seat cushion; they are extremely comfortable to sit in, and lovely to look at!

NOTE: the Buttercup chair has been sold; the Daffodil is still available.
